Most glitter is made from plastics, which takes hundreds of years to break down and adds to the growing problem of microplastics in the environment. Microplastics are consumed by plankton, fish, and birds, so animals often die because of the build-up in their systems.
But don’t worry, there’s a solution! Eco glitter is designed to be metabolised by microorganisms in the sewage system, so very little, if any end up in the ocean. These microorganisms are also present in the ocean and in the soil, and the glitter is consumed completely over several months.
Some of the other glitter on the market claiming to be biodegradable do have a cellulose component however are made from PLA, Cellulose Acetate or Cellophane. As they don’t degrade in the natural environment, for example, a farmer’s field, wastewater, lakes or rivers, they are no better than plastic.
This fabulous glitter is 100% plastic-free and Certified OK Biodegradable WATER by TÜV and can pass the Fresh Water ISO14851 testing at 92% in just 28 days.
